Swing Shift is a nonprofit community-based big band located in Eugene, Oregon. It was begun in 1978 under the auspices of the City of Eugene’s Parks and Recreation Department as an outlet for interested players to rehearse and perform big band music. The band has always had a strong educational emphasis; many of its members are (or were) music educators or students. Performances and workshops for public schools and jazz festivals are regular events, and members are often adjudicators and/or clinicians. Swing Shift is directed by composer/arranger Jim Olsen.
