JAZZ FOR LOCALS

Jazz at Newport marks its eighth year in 2011, as its recognition and popularity grows. The Oregon Coast Council for the Arts (OCCA) is the organizational sponsor of the international event, partnering with local businesses and more than 60 volunteers in the production of the festival, which runs Sept. 30 to Oct. 2 at the Newport Performing Arts Center and the Shilo Inn Suites Hotel in Newport, Oregon. The event brings world-class jazz to the central Oregon coast in the “jazz party” format, which means that visiting musicians will appear in different combinations, called “sets.”

In an effort to reach more local residents, Jazz at Newport offers a number of  sets at reduced prices for Lincoln County residents, available for purchase in person Sept. 6-29 only, with residence identification. World-class jazz at affordable prices is hard to miss. Here are some details of the "Jazz for Locals" sets:

• Set 1: "Opening Night," 7-10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30 – Features the Jeff Hamilton Trio at 7 p.m.; NYC's Anat Cohen (on clarinet and tenor sax) with guitarist Howard Alden, bassist Christoph Luty and drummer Lewis Nash at 8 p.m.; and the renowned pianist Monty Alexander with his bassist Hassan Shakur and Jeff Hamilton on drums at 9 p.m. Ticket price for the session, which is $38, is reduced to $25 each or two for $40 for locals.

• Set 3: "Jazz Three Ways," 12:15-3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1 – Innovative combinations include solo performances by Tamir Hendelman, Kristin Korb, Mike Wofford, Jeff Hamilton, Monty Alexander and Mike Horsfall; duo performances by Anat Cohen and Howard Alden followed by Terell Stafford and Mike Wofford; and trio performances by Korb, Hendelman and Hamilton followed by Alden, Luty and Nash. Ticket price for the session, which is $38, is reduced to $25 each or two for $40 for locals.

• Set 8: "The Wrap Session," 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 – Weber Iago/David Valdez Chamber Jazz Project begins this set, followed by the powerhouse trio of Monty Alexander on piano, Hassan Shakur on bass and Lewis Nash on drums. The festival concludes with an all-artist jam session. Ticket price for the session, which is $38, is reduced to $25 each or two for $40 for locals.

To purchase sampler tickets, residents must show proof of Lincoln County residency by DMV ID or voter registration. All sampler tickets must be purchased in person at the PAC Box Office between Sept. 6 and Sept. 29.
